The whole Avoca region was named after the celtic word for ‘where the river meets the sea’. The Awabakel Aborigines were the original inhabitants of this scenic beach and lakeside area. John Moore, Army Officer was the first Caucasian settler to own land in the suburb. He was granted a 640 acre lot named ‘Avoca’ in 1830 and went on to grow an assortment of grains & fruits.
